On day three of the Bateragune trial at the Spanish High Court in Madrid, a dozen police officers gave evidence while the Prosecution excused a further eight who were also due to testify.
During very brief testimonies, lasting a few minutes each, the agents confirmed the details of the witness statements, answering "I don''t remember" when members of of Prosecution of Defence attempted to probe them further.
One of the agents confirmed that on April 30th 2009, he followed Arnaldo Otegi, Santiago Orue and another identified male as they travelled by car to Iparralde (French Basque Country) when he alleges they met up with former ETA member, Jokin Etxebarria Lagisquet.
The officer told the court that, once in Iparralde, all four men got in the same car and made an "abnormal journey" in order to avoid being followed.
The trial resumes on Thursday morning at 10am when more officers will testify. In the afternoon, witnesses for the defence will be cross-examined, including Txiki Muñoz (ELA) Ainhoa Etxaide (LAB) and Unai Sordo (CCOO), as well as longstanding members of the Basque nationalist left, Floren Aoiz and Tasio Erkizia.
