Supreme Court to decide whether to challenge Bildu by end of month

Basque journalist Martín Garitano and medical doctor Juan Carlos Izagirre, both independent runners, will be the leading names in the list of candidates to be presented by the coalition party Bildu to the General Assembly of Gipuzkoa and the Local Council of Donostia-San Sebastian. The Supreme Court, meanwhile, announced on Monday that it would reach a decision about whether to challenge the coalition''s lists by 29th-30th April.

Bildu made the announcement on Monday afternoon during a political act which took place in Donostia-San Sebastian in which the coalition, made up of EA, Alternatiba and autonomous pro-independence candidates announced the names on their list of runners to the Gipuzkoan General Assembly and the council of San Sebastian.

These lists are among the almost 300 candidates which the Secretary General of EA, Pello Urizar, and the Coordinator of Alternativa, Oskar Matute, announced on Monday would be registered by the coalition within most Basque and Navarre towns by midnight on Monday, the deadline for formalising this process.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court set a deadline of 29th and 30th April for deciding whether to bring possible legal action against the lists presented by Bildu.

During a press conference given on Monday morning, Pello Urizar of EA said that (the Supreme Court) could argue "a thousand reasons", but would not have "even one" piece of evidence to justify challenging the electoral lists presented by Bildu.
