The Accordionist''s Son by Bernardo Atxaga has been awarded as the best translation by the Times Literary Supplement in addition to other foreign awards such as Mondello and Grinzane Cavour, both obtained by the Basque writer in 2008.

According to Alfaguara publishers, the Times has just published its annual literary supplement which annually appoints the best translations into English and Margaret Jull Costa is among the winners of 2009 thanks to the version of El hijo del acordeonista, entitled The Accordionist''s Son in the UK.

The work, one of the most personal of Atxaga, already won the Spanish Association of Literary Critics'' Award in Basque language. Its translation into Spanish, conducted by himself and by his wife Asun Garikano, was selected for the National Award for Fiction in 2004, a prize that the writer had already won in 1989 with Obabakoak.

Bernardo Atxaga''s novels have been translated into more than 20 languages and the interest in them is still growing: translations of Siete casas en Francia (Seven houses in France), Obabakoak, El hombre solo (The man alone) and The Accordionist''s Son have been launched recently.
